New Frontier in Africa

After the excellent performance of Mexico, Volkswagen trucks and Buses opened a second foreign plant.

This time, the city chosen was Uitenhage-Port Elizabeth in Eastern Cape, South Africa, where Volkswagen had already been producing automobiles and light commercial vehicles since 1951. By end of 2008 a range of 5 Constellation truck models and 4 Volksbus bus chassis models were beign produced in Port Elisabeth. Other 3 extra-heavy Constellations models are planned to be launched in 2009.

All the products are right-hand drive, and local market practices and legal requirements include front and rear brakes with ABS and an insect protector mounted on the front grill.

By end of 2008 more than 800 units were produced at S. Africa plant (603 trucks and 224 bus chassis) were commercialized in the South African market and neighboring countries: Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana Mozambique and Namibia.
